Teens - Witnessing Domestic Violence

IF YOU ARE LIVING IN A HOME WHERE THERE IS VIOLENCE:

IT IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE A PLAN FOR WHAT YOU WILL DO THE NEXT TIME VIOLENCE OCCURS IN YOUR HOME!!!  THESE ARE SOME IMPORTANT QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF:

  • WHERE WOULD YOU GO?  Is there a safe place in your house for you to go or is there a neighbor close by for you to go to?

  • DO YOU NEED TO TAKE ANYONE WITH YOU?  Are there sisters or brothers that you should be concerned about?

  • IS THERE ANYONE THAT YOU SHOULD CALL?  Is there a relative that you should call?  Should you call the Police or Sheriff’s Department?  Memorize your address, directions to your home and the phone number in case you need to tell that to the police.

  • IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE THAT YOU SHOULD DO?  The most important thing to do is to make sure that everyone is safe.  You do not want to do anything to put yourself in more danger.  Do not try to come between the people who are fighting.  If you feel someone is in danger, call 911.
