CALENDAR OF EVENTS
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month
April is a month set aside across the nation for every community
to focus on the societal problem of sexual violence and on ways
to help end it. It is highly likely that many residents in our
community know someone that has been sexually assaulted, since
the latest statistics show that one in four girls and
one in seven males will be sexually assaulted by the
time that they can vote. Every minute of every day a woman is
raped in this country. Most victims know their attacker, and
rape very often happens in a person's own home. Victims of sexual
assault can be male or female, young or old, rich or poor; sexual
assault knows no boundaries.
Sexual assault is defined as any forced, tricked or manipulated sexual contact, touch and/or
penetration against a person's will. There are many types of sexual assault ranging from
forcible rape to forced touching outside or underneath clothing to exposing. Sexual assault can
occur within the family, with dates or acquaintances, or with strangers. Sexual assaults are
acts of violence that are motivated primarily out of anger and/or a need to feel powerful by
controlling, dominating or humiliating the victim. Sexual assault is not motivated by sexual
gratification.
