Child Abuse Prevention Month
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. If you know someone who seems overwhelmed by caring for their little ones, why not
offer some friendly help. Offering to babysit or being available for a chat can help a lot when
someone is feeling stressed as a parent. A little bit of help can make a very big difference.
Think about it.
By preventing child abuse today, you will help to reduce the number of children who grow up to
abuse their children. Stopping the cycle of child abuse is one way to ensure a brighter future
for all our children.
Think about it. What if adults talked to one another the way
they sometimes talk to children? It'd be unacceptable. Yet,
how often have you heard a parent say, "You're worthless" or
"You're really stupid." Children believe what adults tell them.
What you say to a child can determine how they feel about themselves.
Stop using words that hurt. Start using words that help.
Hands of Hope Resource Center supports Child Abuse Prevention
Month. Please show your support by wearing a blue ribbon during
the month of April. If you would like a blue ribbon, please
contact Karla at 632-1657.
WHY WEAR BLUE RIBBONS?
The blue ribbon is the symbol of child abuse prevention. It's origins date back to 1989 when a
Chesapeake, Virginia, grandmother named Bonnie Finney adopted the symbol as a testimonial to her
3-year-old grandson who was murdered by his mother's abusive boyfriend -- "One day I was just
thinking about all the bruises on the grandchildren, especially my grandson's head. I decided I
was going to tie a blue ribbon on my van. Why blue? I intend never to forget the battered,
bruised bodies of my grandchildren. Blue serves as a constant reminder to me to fight for the
protection of our children."
